Blenheim IV R3829 crashed in Torpet Kær, Vadum on 13/8-1940.

The aircraft belonged to RAF 82 Sqn. Bomber Command and was coded UX-S.
T/o 0840 Watton OP:Aalborg.

R3829 was hit by shells during the bomb run and just after having released its bombs a fire broke out. Pilot S/Ldr. Rusty Wardell severely burned in his face and on his hands and he ordered his crew to bale out and jumped himself. One of the crew members managed to get out but was caught by the tail of the aircraft and died when it hit the ground, while the other died inside the aircraft.
The plane crashed at Torpet Kær, one km. north east of Vadum.

Air gunner Sgt Thomas E. Girvan and Observer F/Sgt George P. Moore were laid to rest in Vadum cemetery on 16/8 1940.

Wardell was taken to the Kamillianerklinikken hospital in Aalborg for treatment. After a while he was sent to Germany and Offlag IX A/H Schloss Spangenberg. Later he was moved to Stalag VIB Mauveerssen bei Meppen, Stalag XXIB Turs to end up in Stalag Luft III Sagan.
