Wellington X HE471 crashed in the North Sea 30/1-1943.


The aircraft belonged to RAAF (RAF) 466 Sqn. Bomber Command.
T/O 11:14 Leconfield. OP: Emden.


Detailed to raid Emden using cloud cover. Crashed into the North Sea probably claimed by a German day fighter from JG 1.

Pilot Lesley F. Axby, Observer Sgt Donald Durham RNZAF, W/Op-Air Gnr. Sgt Wilfred Jackson and Air Gnr. P/O Terrance G. Watson have no known graves and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
 
The body of Observer Sgt James H. A. Beath was found drifted ashore on the island of Mandø on 25/2 and was laid to rest in Fovrfelt cemetery in Esbjerg on 4/3-1943.
