Lancaster III ED557 believed crashed Store Bælt 21/4-1943.


The aircraft belonged to RAF 100 Sqn. Bomber Command and was coded HW-Y.
T/o 21:57 Grimsby. OP : Stettin.


On the return flight the aircraft was apparently hit by flak at 01:31 hours from II Zug I./lei 985 and from Sperrbrecker 22 and crashed into the Store Bælt.

Pilot F/Lt William A. Jones, Sgt Donald R. Ling, F/O Guy B. Herring RAAF, Sgt Bernard M. Cooper, Sgt Alfred M. Hodges and Sgt Samuel J. Houston have no known graves and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

On 28/4 the body of Sgt Clifford Walker was found in Samsø Bælt and was laid to rest in Bispebjerg cemetery in København on 1/5-1943.
