Stirling III BK698 shot down over The North Sea on 21/4 1943.

The aircraft belonged to RAF 149 Sqn. Bomber Command and was coded OJ-O.
T/O 22:03 Lakenheath. OP: Rostock.

It is believed that this was the aircraft which was claimed by a German night fighter piloted by Oberleutnant Günter Koeberich of 11./NJG 3 at 03:24 hours in Planquadrat 8611.
Koeberich was flying a JU 88C-6 with the crew of Bordfunker Unteroffizier Walter Heidenrich and Bord mech. Feldwebel Walter Kramell when he attacked a bomber returning from east towards west. The bomber tried to escape, but while doing so, its pilot stalled the aircraft and it crashed to the sea from 800 meter.
Planquadrat 8611 is the German code for the area west of Esbjerg and Ringkobing.

The dead body of Navigator / Bomber F/Lt David I. McNarey RNZAF was washed ashore a little to the north of groyne number 31 at Beach area 17 at Knopper where it was found by Reciever of Wrecks Chr. Langer.
The body was collected by a Luftwaffe commando from Rom airfield and laid to rest in Lemvig cemetery on May 15 1943.

The rest of the crew have no known graves and are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
They were Pilot F/L George I. Ellis RNZAF, Pilot P/O Ian A.M. Holloway, Flt Engr. Sgt Fred L.C. Kelly, Navigator P/O Ernest Booth, W/Op Sgt Edwin R. Ginn, Air Gnr. Sgt Frederick Sheppard and Air Gnr. Sgt Peter B. Mills.
