Lancaster III JA713 crashed in the sea of Kattegat off
Tunø 4/9 1943.
The aircraft belonged to RAF 7 Sqn Bomber Command and was coded MG-V.
T/o 20:12 Oakington. OP: Berlin.
On the return flight JA713 was attacked by a night fighter and exploded in the
air at 02:30 hours approxemately 1 kilometres south of the island of Tunø
killing all onboard.
On 4/9 at 12:00 the body of Wop Sergeant Percy Barnsley was found in the sea off
Norsminde and taken to the police station in Odder. He was later picked up by
Luftwaffe personnel from Ry air field and brought to Esbjerg where he was laid
to rest in Fovrfelt cemetery on 8/9 1943.
The body of Navigator Flight Sergeant Edward Robinson was found in the sea off
Norsminde on 15/9 at 10:30 hours by the fishing vessel AS 68 “Juliane” of Aarhus
and brought to Aarhus where it was handed over to the German Wehrmacht. Robinson
was laid to rest in Aarhus Vestre cemetery on 20/9 1943 at 08:00 hours.
On 24/9 the dead body of Pilot Flying Officer Anthony Crockford was found washed
ashore at Sletterhage and was at 08:00 hours on 27/9 1943 laid to rest in Aarhus
Vestre cemetery.
Flight Engineer Sergeant Henry Allen Eaton, Air Bomber Sergeant Gordon Vardy ,
Air Gunner Flight Sergeant Leroy Anwell Watson RAAF, Air Gunner Sergeant William
Charles Luke Wood have no known grave and are commemorated on the Runnymede
Memorial.
