Stirling III BK778 shot down on 4/11 1943 at Beersted.


The aircraft was operated by RNZAF (RAF) 75 Sqn. and was coded JN-U.
T/O 16:00 Mepal. OP: Gardening Silverthorn (Kattegat)


At 21:10 hours BK778 was attacked by a JU 88 C-6 night fighter piloted by Lt. Hindelmayer from IV / NJG 3 and exploded in the air. None of the crew survived.

Pilot P/O William S. Masters RNZAF, Air Gnr. F/Sgt Lewis S. Crawford-Watson RNZAF, Air Gnr. F/Sgt Leslie Grimwood, Navigator F/Sgt George B. Imrie RNZAF, Air Bomber F/Sgt Charles James RNZAF and W/Op-Air Gnr. Sgt Reginald J. Thomas were laid to rest at the cemetery at Frederikshavn on November 13. 1943.
There was found no trace of Flt. Engr. Sgt Arthur A. Copeland and he is commemorated on The Runnymede Memorial.
