P 51D-5-NA 44-13951 crashed in Grådyb 27/8-1944.

The aircraft belonged to USAAF, 8 Air Force20 Fighter Group,55 Fighter Squadron.
T/O Kingscliffel. OP: Berlin.

44-13951 was escorting bombers. The attack on Berlin was cancelled due to bad weather and Esbjerg was attacked as target of opportunity. The P 51`s attacked targets on the ground on and around the airfield.

Lt. Col. Cy Wilson attacked from northeast and was hit by flak. He managed to climb and continued out over the sea where he bailed out 8-10 miles from the coast.

Other aircrafts pointed fishing vessel E 332 “Benny Jensen” towards Wilson and he was picked up. When approaching Esbjerg harbour a German vorpostboot demanded that he was handed over.

On 29/7 Wilson was sent to Dulag Luft at Oberursel for interrogation.
After interrogation he was sent to Stalag Luft I Barth.
