Bf 109D serial number 3097 crashed near Fliegerhorst Grove
11/9 1942.
The aircraft belonged to 2./ Jagdgruppe Drontheim (Jagdfl. Schule 3) and was
coded
T/o Grove. Op: Training.
The Bf 109 crashed in the gunnery area northwest of Fliegerhorst Grove due to
pilot error and was a 100% loss.
Student pilot Leutnant Gerhard Schnell died and
was laid to rest in Frederikshavn cemetery on 14/9 1942.
Note: From studies at the crash site and based on witness testimony it seems as
if he forgot to level out and flew into the ground.
