Ju 87R serial number 5840 crashed north of Fliegerhorst Aalborg West 4/9 1943.


The aircraft belonged to II/ LLG 1 and was coded ?
T/o Aalborg West. Op: Flight to Stavanger.


Pilot Leutnant Elfried Eichhoff and Wop Gefreiter Gerhard Köhler took off from Fliegerhorst Aalborg West with a fully loaded DFS 237 glider in tow.
The purpose was to tow it to Stavanger in Norway where it should demonstrate a glider assault. The Ju 87 stalled shortly after take off and at 13:10 hours crashed in a field belonging to Farmer Røn of Vadum killing Leutnant Eichhoff outright and severely wounding Gefreiter Köhler.

Köhler was taken to Luftwaffe Lazarett Aalborg where he died on 6/9.
On 13/9 1943 both Eichhoff and Köhler was laid to rest in Frederikshavn cemetery.

The Ju 87 was 90% damaged.

The pilot of the glider reacted quickly when the JU 87 stalled, and let go of the tow wire and landed safe in a field belonging to Farmer Therp a little southwest of the crash site.
