Bf 110E-1 serial number 3439 crashed at Stenbjerg Klitplantage 17/3 1941.

The aircraft belonged to Erg./II./ ZG 76 and was coded M8+CN
T/o Aalborg Ost. Op: Feindflug.

The Bf 110 crashed into the Stenbjerg Klitplantage plantation at approximately 15:00 hours killing the two crew members while the aircraft was a 100% loss.

Pilot Leutnant Josef Steininger and Wop Johannes Schönbach were laid to rest in Frederikshavn cemetery on 21/3 1941.

The RL report reports the loss as an Absturz while local people reports to have seen two aircrafts circling Snejstrup and Vorupør while diving and climbing. Suddenly one aircraft hit the ground and disintegrated.

When the author visited the crash site on 4/12 1994 it was clear that the aircraft had hit the ground at a steep angle, probably in a high speed stall, and had disintegrated. Several remains of the aircraft could be found in the plantation.

It should be noted that the RL records the aircraft code as 5M8+CN.
